Inspired by the 2009 NACE Fundraiser: “Wicked Table Top Competition”   Each year we get to think “out of the box” on how to display our images- we’ve done images on cakes, table runners, isle runners, ice sculptures, confetti and more.  This year as we move to make our studio as Green as possible we came up with the concept of Foto Furniture.   It pairs my  love of  thrift shops and color- with my husbands photographic and  carpentry skills.  We found these great old chairs that were begging for a new life- painted them and reupholstered them with photographic images on material.  These “chair children”  are 7 nieces and nephews in there portrayal of what they would look like if someone sat on them.   What a scream to photograph!  Our table won for its catagory and the chairs were a huge hit- with many asking how they could buy their own!-M

It is photography, it’s furniture and art.  It is totally cool because it is a nexus of a number of things we think are important.  It has a photographic component, it is funky artsy and it is Green.  From a “Green” Perspective it is a perfect “Recycle, Reuse & Re-purpose” project.  In this case, the chairs were no longer wanted.   They were a little soiled and beat up, but in great shape structurally.  We had the funny photo idea of putting faces on the chairs with the notion of  “what face would you pull if some one was going to sit on you”.   The picture on the seats and bold color gave it a funky out of the box look that you won’t see anywhere else.

We cleaned, painted and then printed images on fabric to recover the seat.  (note:  we do the fabric printing in-house).  When completed they are a great art converstion piece and functional.   Our next project is reworking a table…  We have the table, now we need the right photos.  We will post photos of the table when we complete the project.- S

To all of you who have asked- YES We can make these for you!  We can use your chairs and table or we can provide you with options.  These are speciality projects and will be priced individually.  Variables to consider include the origins of the furniture, the photographs and the timeline for production.  They will generally take several weeks to produce.

I thought I’d upload a quick video from our recent “Easter in Duke Gardens” photo session. I turned out to be a beautiful day. In fact is was so beautiful that all of Durham came for a visit. It was totally mobbed and the parking lot was full. Fortunately the parking angels were with us and we got a spot.

The photography was a challenge with all the people walking around.  I’m amazed at how many times the general public will park themselves directly behind the client, in the middle of the photo session and then point at us as though we wouldn’t notice that they are right in the middle of our shot….   then ask clever questions about if we are there take portraits… I digress…

So, we found some great and less busy locations, worked our angles and with a the occasional help from Photoshop in post-production… it looks like we had the park to ourselves!

“Child Portraiture” or Kid photography seems to fall in 2 camps, “el-cheepo” (the kind done at national big box stores as a loss leader) and formal. Big box stores sell 2.5 million wallets for $15.23 because they want you to shop at their store, not because pictures make them money. They want you to come in once for the photos session (& then do some shopping around the store), once to pick out the ones you like (& then do some shopping around the store), and then once more to pick up all those wallets (& then do some shopping around the store). The other way is formal, traditional and most judge to be too expensive.

We have found that some of the very best pictures come from letting kids be kids. Let them have FUN. It is contempory, sophiscated, fun and passionate. We encourage our clients to bring in their child’s favorite toy, costumes and props. Our portrait sessions are inside or out. We love to work with our clients and explore the type of image they want created and were in their house they want to decorate. If you think it is about 1 8×10 for grammy, the bar is being set a little low. The photography, frames, & canvas prints are stunning decor and can be used a a visual center piece for decorating a room. That may be a kids room but they also can work great for great rooms, hallways, bathrooms and bonus rooms. Oh, and yes, we can make an 8×10 for grammy.

One of our favorite sessions is the “Jump Around” session. It is funny, but kids love to jump. Hair flies, arm flail and we get great expressions! Take a look at the video with this posting and see for yourself.
